About Humboldt Public Library:
Built of native limestone in 1909 from a Carnegie endowment, the original library is now joined by an addition built in 1992. The old library received a facelift and sports a new addition to the west, which now makes it accessible to everyone with an elevator.
A state-of-the-art lighting system, coupled with an abundance of windows, create a bright, inviting atmosphere.
The east entrance was restored to its original form, including eye-catching wooden doors. A second entrance on the north side is accessed either by steps or a ramp. There is also a book and video return at the north entrance.
Oak columns and oak woodwork add to the inviting atmosphere. The library's circulation department is completely computerized. Computers with direct Internet access are also available for use by the public. New microfilm equipment allow people to research a variety of items, including old newspaper articles.
Much of the lower level is devoted to the Children's Library, which offers many children's programs. The lower level also contains a community meeting room called the Springvale Room. With restrooms and the separate north entrance, the Springvale Room can be used during off library hours.
The library is located on 6th Street North, just one-half block north of Sumner Avenue. The staff includes Nikki Ehlers, library director; Jean Holste, children’s librarian; Demi Johnson, young adult librarian; and assistants Marilyn Lindemann, Kathy Hensch, Martha Schmidt, and Virginia Hart. The library also has a small team of volunteers who help with circulation duties, book processing, children’s programs and displays.
The library has a five-member Board of Trustees, who are appointed by Mayor Walter Jensen and approved by the city council. The current Board of Trustees are:
