Consumer Reports is Now Available on the HPL’s EBSCO Host!
I have some interesting news ---Consumer Reports magazine is now available on our library database, EBSCO Host. This will take some explaining, so if I confuse you, stop by the library or give me a call and I will do my best to help sort it out.
EBSCO Host is a product we purchase, with help from the State Library of Iowa. It is available on the library webpage. EBSCO is a method, a vehicle for accessing newspapers, magazines and journals. It’s not like using YAHOO or Google. There will be no advertising, no SPAM will follow, you won’t find some kook’s opinion. All you will find is newspaper and magazine articles concerning whatever it is you wish to know.
First step is to access our website: www.humboldtpubliclibrary.com. On the lefthand side of the page, click on EBSCO. Next will be a box asking you to either register with the library for a password, or to sign in if you know the login information. You can go through the registration process, if you like. It will send me an automatic email. I will then send you the information. However, I’ll save you that step: the user Id is Humboldtr (notice the “r” on the end) and the password is remote.
When EBSCO opens up, scan through the list of separate databases and choose Masterfile Premier. When the search box appears, type in what you would like to research. I tried LCD televisions. In the box for name of publication, type in Consumer Reports. If you leave that box empty then it will research information from a long list of publications. Hit the search button. What will appear is a list of the most recent articles concerning your subject. Select the “full text” button and the article will magically appear, illustrations and all. I found out that I should have done some research before I bought my tv set. No wonder the screen is peculiar.
Play around with the other databases in addition to Masterfile Premier. There are separate ones for newspapers, some specifically for educators, some for consumer health information. Lots of information is there at your fingertips. Take advantage of it. It’s free for your use.
If you run into one of our state legislators, thank her or him for providing the funds that allow the State Library to subsidize the cost of EBSCO Host. We couldn’t do it without them.

The blogs are just getting started so be sure to check it often and let us know what you think about it.
