TODDLER TIIME offers children ages two through young three and caregiver simple stories, songs, and large muscle activities related to the toddler’s world. The six-week program is held on Tuesday mornings and repeated late Tuesday afternoon in the spring.

PAJAMARAMA is held on Monday at 6:30 p m. for children ages 3, 4, 5, and 6. The fall and spring sessions are 8 weeks long: the winter session is 4 weeks long. Children are encouraged to come in their pajamas for bedtime stories and fun!  Many area families enjoy bringing siblings to Pajamarama.

PRESCHOOL STORY TIME is for children ages 3, 4, or 5 and has traditionally been held on Friday mornings.

YOUNG FRIENDS, for students in 4th and 5th grades, is offered for six-weeks on Wednesday afternoons in February and/or March. Students participate in puppet shows, creative dramatics, book discussions and/or a library newspaper.  Each group of twelve students decides their activities.

DAYCARE VISITS are offered to Humboldt  / Dakota City registered daycare centers from September to May. A bin of 30 books, KITS, and puppets is delivered and a 20-minute story time is offered. Currently 10 daycare centers are participating in this program. Contact Sarah Evans for more information on Daycare Visits.

SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM   --- Each summer in June and July the children’s library provides a summer reading and story time program to children ages 3 through entering 5th grade.  Using materials from the State Library of Iowa, a different theme is offered each summer. Statistics prove that encouraging children to read over the summer months helps maintain their reading skills for success in the following school year.

For more information about children's programs and to register, please contact Sarah Evans, Children’s Librarian with your suggestions at childrenslibrary@humboldtpubliclibrary.com or tel. 515-332-1925.

Adult Programs

Throughout the year the library sponsors programs for adults. A recent workshop program, Writing Your Life Stories, has evolved into the Humboldt Writing Group which meets monthly at the library. There are also several different reading groups and book clubs. For several years the library has partnered with the Iowa State University Extension Office and Homecare Connection to offer Women’s Night Out. Another popular adult program is the Lunch Bunch which is a noon brown-bag lunch series offered spring and fall with local speakers.  Be sure to check the newsletter on our webpage for upcoming programs.

Young Adult Programs

Demi Johnson became the Young Adult Librarian in 2004. Under her care, “The Den,” as the teen area of the library is called, has grown and blossomed. Circulation and usage has increased every year. The space, itself, is newly redecorated with café tables and comfortable seating. Teen activities include the very first library-sponsored Dance Dance Revolution program in Iowa. Guitar Hero, another interactive video game, has also been added. The annual Teen Summer Library Program is more than a reading program. Past events have included a mystery writing contest and a film your own scary movie contest. The summer program ends with a drawing for those who have participated. Recent prizes have been an ipod, a digital cameral and portable dvd player.
